VICTORIA – Winning its 11th-straight game, the University of Victoria men's basketball team defeated the University of the Fraser Valley, 94-57, Feb. 12, at CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter – UVic 30, UFV 16
- A quick five points from the Vikes opened the game, and was immediately met with five from the Cascades, making it 5-5 with 7:25 to go.
- UVic began to pull away with an 8-0 run, taking a 15-7 lead over UFV at the halfway point of the quarter.
- Continuing to separate, the Vikes added four points in the final minute of the quarter to take a 30-16 lead after 10 minutes of play.
2nd Quarter – UVic 51, UFV 29
- A slow start for both sides in the second quarter, UVic would go ahead 34-16 on layups from Aaron Tesfagiorgis and Scott Kellum over the first three and half minutes.
- Victoria and Fraser Valley would go back-and-forth for the remainder of the quarter, with UVic holding a steady advantage.
- A buzzer-beating three-pointer from Kellum gave the Vikes a 51-29 advantage at the half.
3rd Quarter – UVic 73, UFV 46
- Fraser Valley would score six unanswered points to bring Victoria's lead to 18, 53-35 at the beginning of the third, but a Matthew Ellis jumper ended the Cascades' run and restored a 20-point Vikes lead, 55-35.
- An 8-4 run for the Vikes ended the third, with UVic ahead, 73-46.
4th Quarter – UVic 94, UFV 57
- Tesfagiorgis gave the Vikes a 30-point lead on the first basket of the fourth quarter, draining a three for the 76-46 UVic lead.
- An ensuring layup from Ellis and three from Kellum completed an 8-0 Vikes scoring run to start the fourth, resulting in an 81-48 lead for Victoria with just over six minutes to play.
- Holding UFV to 11 points in the final quarter, the Vikes claimed the 94-57 victory.
WORTH NOTING
- The win marks the Vikes' 11th-straight victory, improving to 12-1 overall on the season.
- Ethan Boag led the Vikes in scoring, registering 18 points. He added eight rebounds in the win, tying for the team-high on the night.
- Kellum, Elias Ralph, and Trent Monkman also recorded double-digit scoring efforts with 17, 16, and 11, respectively. Monkman tied for a team-high with eight boards.
