Lethbridge, Alta. – The second-seeded University of Victoria men's basketball team once again proved it is one of the best in the conference, eliminating the seventh-seeded University of Lethbridge on its home court, 79-55, in the Canada West playoff quarterfinals, March 5, at 1st Choice Savings Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter – UVic 19, Lethbridge 19
- Scott Kellum and Matthew Ellis teamed up for the first six points of the game, with Scott Kellum scoring two free throws and Ellis knocking down back-to-back jumpers to make it a 6-2 Vikes lead with 8:15 to go.
- Back-to-back three's by the Pronghorns gave the home team its first lead of the night, 7-6, with 7:15 to go.
- Four points from Kellum and a jumper from Elias Ralph gave the Vikes their lead back, 12-7, with five minutes to go in the opening quarter.
- Lethbridge knocked down two-straight three's for the second time in the quarter, regaining a 14-13 lead with 2:25 to play.
- Ellis would make the score an even 19-19 with a free throw in the final seconds to end the first quarter.
2nd Quarter – UVic 42, Lethbridge 33
- A free throw from Dominick Oliveri and jumper from Ellis put a quick three points on the board for the Vikes, making it a 22-19 Vikes lead with 9:15 until halftime.
- After the Pronghorns tied the game back up, 24-24, the Vikes went on to score nine unanswered points on a pair of Ethan Boag free throws, an Oliveri jumper, Boag bucket, and Diego Maffia three for a 33-24 lead with 5:20 to go.
- Four-straight points from Ralph, by way of jumper and dunk, gave the Vikes a double-digit lead, 40-28, with a minute and half to play.
- Lethbridge scored the final points of the quarter, scoring a three to make UVic's lead 42-33 at the half.
3rd Quarter – UVic 63, Lethbridge 39
- A pair of free throws by Lethbridge opened the second-half scoring, but was met with an Ellis jumper in the next possession to keep it a nine-point game in favour of the Vikes, 44-35, with eight minutes on the clock.
- Ellis pushed the Vikes' lead back to 11, 48-37, after rebounding his own free throw and laying it in for two points with 5:41 to go.
- Coming out of a Lethbridge-called timeout, Kellum drained a three to make it a 51-37 game for the Vikes with five minutes to go.
- The Vikes would take its first 20-point lead of the night on a Maffia three, 61-39, with 30 seconds remaining in the quarter.
- A Boag dunk in the final seconds made it 63-39 in favour of the Vikes at the end of the third, holding the Pronghorns to just six points over the 10 minutes of play.
4th Quarter – UVic 79, Lethbridge 55
- Maffia put the first points of the fourth quarter on the board with a layup, giving UVic a 65-39 lead with 9:30 to play.
- A three from Kellum made it a 25-point game, 73-48, with just under five minutes to go.
- Scoring six points to the Vikes' two, Lethbridge made it a 22-point game, 77-55, with just over two minutes left.
- Keeping Lethbridge at a distance for the remainder of the game, the Vikes punched their ticket to the semifinals with a 79-55 victory.
WORTH NOTING
- The win moves the Vikes to 18-1 on the season, as well as secures the program's first Canada West Final Four appearance since the 2014-15 season. The Vikes went on to win the conference title that year.
- The last meeting between the Vikes and Pronghorns came during the 2019 Canada West playoffs play-in series. The Pronghorns handled the Vikes, 98-65, in that matchup.
- Canada West First Team All-Star Kellum led the Vikes with 16 points, adding team-highs of eight rebounds and two steals in the win.
- Maffia and Ellis each added 15 points, along with six and five rebounds, respectively.
- Coming off selections to the Canada West All-Rookie team, Ralph and Boag came through for the Vikes, adding 12 and 10 points in the win, respectively.
