Vikes down Pronghorns to advance to Canada West semifinals

Calgary, Alta. – The University of Victoria men's soccer team defeated the University of Lethbridge, 3-1, Oct. 28 on the campus of Mount Royal University to advance to the semifinal round of the Canada West playoffs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A corner awarded to the Vikes in the 18th minute resulted in Javier Sagaste's cross being headed away by Lethbridge defenders, but Alex Moody managed to get a foot on the deflection and send it to the back of the net for the 1-0 Vikes lead.
  • Sending the ball into the box from the right side of the field, Jordan Mckinty met Sagaste's pass and struck it over the line to give Victoria a 2-0 lead in the 30th minute.
  • Adding one more goal before the halftime break, Matthew Pearse's cross attempt was headed away by the Pronghorns, but Yassin Guitouni beat everyone to the ball and sent it straight past the Lethbridge goalkeeper for the 3-0 UVic lead in the 39th minute.
  • The Pronghorns would score in the 86th minute to make the score 3-1, but the Vikes kept them off the board for the remaining time to seal the quarterfinal win.
WORTH NOTING
  • Moody and Mckinty each recorded their first goals as Vikes in the win, while Guitouni's goal marked his third of the year.
  • Sagaste added an assist to his team-leading total in the win to sit at seven on the season, while Pearse collected his second assist of the year in the win.
  • Despite the Pronghorns finishing with the 12-10 lead in overall shots, the Vikes held the advantage in shots on goal, 8-6.
  • Callum Weir tallied five saves in net for the Vikes in the win.
  • The Vikes move to 11-4-2 on the year with the win and secure an appearance in the Canada West semifinals. Lethbridge's season comes to a close with a 4-6-5 record.
