Vikes hold off Cascades for series win

Abbotsford, B.C. – The University of Victoria men's basketball team completed the series sweep of the University of the Fraser Valley with a 97-86 win, Nov. 11 at the UFV Athletic Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Elias Ralph posted the first five points of the night for the Vikes, giving Victoria a 5-0 lead with nine minutes to go in the opening frame.
  • Though the Cascades pulled within one and the two sides traded baskets for the remainder of the first, the Vikes created some separation on back-to-back three's by Griffin Arnatt and Ryan Gallagher to hold a 30-24 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Back-and-forth for much of the second quarter as well, the Cascades came within two, 39-37, with 4:31 until the half.
  • Building a bit of a cushion back, a final jumper by Diego Maffia gave Victoria a 51-43 lead after two quarters of play.
  • A 13-0 UVic run capped by an Aaron Tesfagiorgis three opened the third quarter, putting the Vikes ahead 64-43 with 7:21 to play.
  • The Vikes' largest lead of the night would come via Maffia three, 74-47 with 3:47 remaining in the third. At the end of the quarter, the Vikes held an 81-59 lead.
  • UFV fought and brought Victoria's lead down to eight over the fourth quarter, before a Ralph jumper neutralized the threat and put the Vikes on their way to finalizing the win, 97-86.
WORTH NOTING
  • Maffia led the Vikes with 29 points, adding six assists and one rebound in the win.
  • Ralph ended the night with 15 points for the Vikes, while Robinson and Arnatt each added 11 to round out the double-digit scoring performances for the Vikes.
  • Victoria improves to 3-1 on the year with the win, while the Cascades fall to 1-3.
