Vancouver, B.C. – The University of Victoria men's basketball team completed the series sweep of the University of British Columbia with a 70-58 win, Nov. 25 at War Memorial Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A jumper and three from Diego Maffia were the only Vikes points for the first seven minutes of play, resulting in the Vikes trailing the Thunderbirds 15-5.
- Griffin Arnatt ended the Vikes' scoring drought with a three-pointer, bringing the score to 15-8 in favour of UBC with less than three minutes to go in the first. The Thunderbirds would ultimately hold an 18-9 lead over the Vikes after the first 10 minutes of play.
- Chipping away at the home side's lead over the first five minutes of the second quarter, Victoria found its first lead of the night on a Maffia jumper with 4:39 to play, putting UVic in front 29-27.
- Maintaining the lead until halftime, the Vikes outscored the Thunderbirds 29-16 in the second quarter for a 38-34 lead.
- Strong defensively in the third quarter, UVic limited UBC to just nine points in 10 minutes to extend their lead to 61-43 at the end of the third.
- The Thunderbirds fought back in the fourth, opening on a 13-0 run pull within five, 61-56, with 6:04 remaining.
- Arnatt would once again break the Vikes' dry spell, scoring three layups along with Maffia's three over the final five minutes to seal the win for Victoria, 70-58.
WORTH NOTING
- Maffia posted team-highs in points (23), assists (4) and steals (2) in the win, adding seven rebounds in 35 minutes on the floor.
- Elias Ralph recorded 19 points in the win, including a team-high four three-point makes along with eight rebounds for the Vikes.
- Arnatt tallied nine points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal in a season-high 27 minutes.
- The Vikes improve to 5-1 on the season with the win, while the Thunderbirds move to 4-4 with the loss.
