Vikes best Thunderbirds on the road

Vancouver, B.C. – The University of Victoria men's basketball team completed the series sweep of the University of British Columbia with a 70-58 win, Nov. 25 at War Memorial Gym.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A jumper and three from Diego Maffia were the only Vikes points for the first seven minutes of play, resulting in the Vikes trailing the Thunderbirds 15-5.
  • Griffin Arnatt ended the Vikes' scoring drought with a three-pointer, bringing the score to 15-8 in favour of UBC with less than three minutes to go in the first. The Thunderbirds would ultimately hold an 18-9 lead over the Vikes after the first 10 minutes of play.
  • Chipping away at the home side's lead over the first five minutes of the second quarter, Victoria found its first lead of the night on a Maffia jumper with 4:39 to play, putting UVic in front 29-27.
  • Maintaining the lead until halftime, the Vikes outscored the Thunderbirds 29-16 in the second quarter for a 38-34 lead.
  • Strong defensively in the third quarter, UVic limited UBC to just nine points in 10 minutes to extend their lead to 61-43 at the end of the third.
  • The Thunderbirds fought back in the fourth, opening on a 13-0 run pull within five, 61-56, with 6:04 remaining.
  • Arnatt would once again break the Vikes' dry spell, scoring three layups along with Maffia's three over the final five minutes to seal the win for Victoria, 70-58.
