Vikes push past Thunderbirds for road win

Vancouver, B.C. – A final-quarter push separated the University of Victoria men's basketball team from the University of British Columbia, giving the Vikes a 90-82 win, Feb. 9 at War Memorial Gym.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first five points of the game went to the Vikes, courtesy of a Diego Maffia three-pointer and Renoldo Robinson layup.
  • Trading baskets for the remainder of the first quarter, UBC put the final points on the board in the opening frame to hold a 22-20 lead after 10 minutes of play.
  • The Thunderbirds maintained a one-basket lead throughout the second quarter, holding a 46-43 lead at the half.
  • A layup from Maffia and three by Elias Ralph out of the break put UVic back on top, 48-46 with 9:26 to play in the third.
  • After UBC regained the lead, a three from Jaden Touchie with two seconds on the clock put the Vikes ahead, 64-62, at the end of the third quarter.
  • A 9-0 run for the Vikes in the fourth quarter, made up of seven points by Maffia and two from Dominick Oliveri, started to create some separation on the scoreboard, giving Victoria an 84-68 advantage with less than four minutes to play in the game.
  • Remaining in front for the rest of the quarter, the Vikes took the 90-82 win over UBC.
WORTH NOTING
  • Maffia recorded a game-high 31 points, going 11-for-11 from the free throw line in the win.
