Halifax, N.S. – The University of Victoria men's basketball team fell to St. Francis Xavier University, 77-64, in the semifinal round of the U SPORTS Top 8, March 11 at Scotiabank Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- StFX opened with a 5-0 lead, before a pair of free throws by Diego Maffia put the Vikes on the board, 5-2, with 7:35 to go in the opening frame.
- The X-Men took a 26-12 lead after one quarter of play, taking advantage of the Vikes shooting just 2-of-16 from field goal range to the X-Men's 11-of-19 shooting.
- Bringing the hosts' lead back to single-digits, an Elias Ralph layup and Ethan Boag jumper opened the second-quarter scoring, bringing the score to 26-18 with 9:17 until the half.
- A pair of free throws from Maffia cut the Vikes' deficit to three, 37-34, with 43 seconds until halftime.
- After an Izzy Helman bucket brought the Vikes back within four, 40-36 with 10 seconds to play, StFX hit a three at the buzzer put the X-Men ahead, 43-36, at the half.
- The X-Men grew their lead out to 14 during the third quarter, but a Robinson bucket in the final seconds halved the difference to seven, to 61-54 in favour of the hosts after 30 minutes of play.
- A six-point Vikes run from a Maffia layup, Robinson jumper, and Ralph layup pulled the Vikes within three, 63-60, forcing a StFX timeout with 7:51 to play.
- Unable to gain the lead, the Vikes fell to the X-Men, 77-64.
WORTH NOTING
- Dominick Oliveri recorded a career-high 24 rebounds, adding three points, four assists, two blocks, and one steal for the Vikes, earning U SPORTS Player of the Game honours.
- Maffia and Ralph led the Vikes offensively with 20 and 16 points, respectively.
- Boag added 11 points and three rebounds for UVic.
- The Vikes' 21-of-76 (27.6%) shooting marks the lowest shooting percentage the Vikes have recorded this season.
- Victoria sits at 21-4 on the season heading into the final game of the year.
