Vancouver, B.C. - A first-half hat trick from
Emma Skalik led the way for the University of Victoria women's soccer team to claim a 6-1 win over the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack, Aug. 26 at the University of British Columbia's Ken Woods Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Recording her first goal of the season in the 11th minute, Skalik found the back of the net on an assist from Ruby Nicholas to give Victoria a 1-0 lead over TRU.
- Taking a 2-0 lead in the 22nd minute, Nicholas got the ball to Skalik once again, who in turn sent it past the WolfPack's goalkeeper for the second time.
- Thompson Rivers halved the Vikes' lead in the 28th minute, bringing the score to 2-1 with their lone goal of the match.
- Completing her hat trick in the 30th minute, Skalik netted her third goal of the day to send the game into halftime with Vikes ahead, 3-1.
- Opening the second-half scoring, Erin Jensen tallied her first goal of the year on Nicholas' second assist of the game in the 60th minute for the 4-1 UVic lead.
- Setting up the play once again, Nicholas found rookie Taiya Scorey, who scored her first goal as a Vike in the 69th minute to bring the score to 5-1.
- Switching roles for the final goal of the night, Nicholas netted her first score of the season on an assist from Skalik in the 71st minute, securing a 6-1 win for the Vikes.
WORTH NOTING
- Skalik's three goals against the WolfPack eclipse her entire goals scored total from the 2022 season (2).
- Nicholas and Fingarson, both in their second seasons at UVic, recorded their first assists as Vikes. Both had previously tallied points via goals in 2022.
- Rookie Taiya Scorey scored her first goal as a Vike in her second career start.
- Victoria finished with a 14-8 advantage in shots and 11-2 edge in shots on goal over TRU.
- The six Vikes goals mark the most for Victoria since a 6-0 shutout of UBCO Sept. 22, 2018 at Centennial Stadium.
- Both the Vikes and WolfPack finish the first weekend of Canada West play with 1-1-0 records.
