Winnipeg, Man. – Going to overtime for the second time in three games, the University of Victoria men's basketball team came away victorious against the University of Manitoba, 103-100, Jan. 20 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a back-and-forth start, the Bisons worked their way to a 10-point lead, 23-13, with 2:43 to go in the opening quarter.
- A layup from Ethan Boag at the 1:21 mark brought the score to 23-15 in favour of Manitoba at the end of the first quarter.
- A pair of free throws by Renoldo Robinson with under 30 seconds to go in the second quarter brought the halftime score to 53-38, with the Bisons still in front.
- Starting to chip away at Manitoba's lead in the third quarter, Robinson used back-to-back three's to bring the Vikes back within one, 56-55, at the 6:08 mark before putting the Vikes in front, 58-56 with 5:32 to play.
- Continuing their run, a Robinson three, Griffin Arnatt three, Ryan Gallagher jumper and Elias Ralph three-pointer gave the Vikes a double-digit lead, 69-58, with three minutes to go in the third quarter.
- Holding the Bisons to single-digit scoring in the third quarter (nine points), the Vikes had a 76-62 lead heading in to the final 10 minutes of play.
- After the Vikes stayed in front for the first half of the quarter, Manitoba made a quick push in the final minutes to narrow Victoria's lead to five, 85-80, with four minutes to go before a three by Ralph brought the Vikes' lead back up to eight, 88-80, with 3:42 to go.
- The Bisons took advantage of a nearly three-minute scoring drought by the Vikes to take the lead, 90-88, with less than a minute to play in regulation.
- Shadynn Smid sent the game to overtime, dunking with 12 seconds on the clock to bring the score to 90-90 at the end of regulation.
- The Bisons struck first in overtime, continuing to hold a slight lead over the Vikes until five-straight points from Robinson put the Vikes in front for the first time in the overtime period, 98-97, with 51 seconds to go.
- Two more free throws from Robinson in the Vikes' next possession put Victoria ahead by three, 100-97, with 19 seconds still on the clock.
- Three free throws by Ralph in the final 11 seconds sealed the win for the Vikes, 103-100.
WORTH NOTING
- The 103 point-performance marks the fourth time the Vikes have scored 100+ points in a Canada West game this season.
- Robinson's 46 points mark the most in a single Canada West men's basketball game this season. He added four rebounds, three assists and one steal in the win.
- Ralph recorded his second double-double of the season, scoring 21 points and tallying a career-high 15 rebounds. He also led the team in assists (4) and steals (3).
- Rookies Gallagher and Arnatt added double-digit scoring performances with 13 and 11, respectively.
- The Vikes move to 9-3 on the year with the win, while the Bisons drop to 11-5 with the loss.
