Vikes take series win over Heat

VICTORIA – A 74-point first half propelled the University of Victoria men's basketball team past the University of British Columbia Okanagan, 115-65, Jan. 6 at CARSA Performance Gym.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Back-to-back three's by Elias Ralph and Diego Maffia put the Vikes ahead, 8-2, and was immediately followed by a Sergio Pereira put-back to take a 10-2 lead with just over seven minutes to go in the first quarter.
  • Continuing to build their lead, a three from Griffin Arnatt with four seconds on the clock brought the first quarter score to 35-13 in favour of the Vikes.
  • An alley-oop by Pereira from Aaron Tesfagiorgis gave the Vikes 50 points at the 6:52 mark of the second quarter.
  • Taking a 30-point lead on Arnatt's third three of the night, 53-22, Victoria extended its lead over the final six minutes to hold a 74-39 advantage over UBCO at halftime.
  • Outscoring UBCO 24-13 in the third, the Vikes led the Heat by a score of 98-50 after 30 minutes of action.
  • Bringing Victoria's lead to 50, Scott Morozov made the score 100-50 with a free throw at the 8:30 mark in the final quarter.
  • Keeping their lead intact for the remainder of the game, the Vikes came away with the 115-65 win. 
WORTH NOTING
  • Arnatt went 5-5 from three in the first half, while Maffia went 6-10 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes. As a team, the Vikes shot 14-25 from three in the first two quarters.
  • Maffia finished with seven made three-pointers, tying for second-most in a single Canada West game this season. He tallied 29 points, six assists and one steal in 24 minutes on the floor for the Vikes.
  • Arnatt finished with 20 points, going 6-7 from three and 7-9 overall in field goal range.
  • The 50-point victory is the largest margin of victory for the Vikes this season, and the 115 points are the second-most scored in a game this year (122 points versus Calgary, Nov. 3).
  • The Vikes move to 7-1 on the year with the win, while the Heat fall to 2-8.
