Third quarter push propels Vikes over Cascades

Abbotsford, B.C. – A third quarter run by the University of Victoria men's basketball team propelled the Vikes to a 98-77 win over the University of the Fraser Valley, Nov. 22 at the UFV Athletic Centre.
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Vikes hold halftime lead after back-and-forth first half
  • Ethan Boag got things started for the Vikes, scoring eight of the first nine Vikes points. His second three-pointer of the night gave the Vikes a 9-7 lead with 5:44 to go in the opening frame.
  • The Vikes took a three-point lead, 21-18, at the end of the first on a three pointer by Renoldo Robinson in the final seconds of the quarter.
  • Diego Maffia became the Vikes' all-time league scoring leader with a layup at the 4:43 mark of the second quarter. The layup marked Maffia's 1,659th career point, officially surpassing Spencer McKay's previous program scoring record of 1,657. The layup gave the Vikes a six-point lead, 38-32.
  • Though the Cascades would take the lead on a three-pointer with 55 seconds to go, 43-42, an Aaron Tesfagiorgis free throw tied the game, and a Geoffrey James three in the final seconds put the Vikes ahead, 46-43, at halftime.
Explosive third quarter seals win for the Vikes
  • The Vikes ran away with the game in the third quarter, scoring 31 points while holding UFV to nine.
  • After the nine Cascades points over the first four minutes of the third quarter, UFV went scoreless for the final six of the frame, leaving the Vikes to capitalize with a 21-0 run to close the quarter and hold a 77-52 lead after 30 minutes of action.
  • Despite the Cascades out-scoring the Vikes in the fourth quarter, 25-21, Victoria's lead was able to absorb the point difference and the Vikes came away with the 98-77 win.
WORTH NOTING
  • Ethan Boag led the Vikes with 23 points, setting a new career high.
  • Diego Maffia recorded 16 points in his record-breaking effort, also adding team-highs in rebounds (7) and assists (8).
  • Shadynn Smid added a 12-point, seven-rebound effort in the win, also tallying two assists and two steals, while Renoldo Robinson finished with 14 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals for the Vikes.
  • The Vikes move to 7-0 on the year with the win, while UFV falls to 3-4.
