Women's soccer opens U SPORTS championship against Ottawa

VICTORIA - The sixth-seeded University of Victoria women's soccer team opens the 2024 U SPORTS women's soccer championship against third-seeded University of Ottawa, Nov. 7 at 1:30 p.m. AT at Dalhousie University.

NEWS & NOTES
  • Coming off a Canada West runner-up performance at the conference playoffs for the first time since 2017, the Vikes hold a 9-3-5 overall and received the sixth seed for the U SPORTS championship.
  • The Vikes will make their first appearance at the U SPORTS championship since hosting the event in 2019. This is the first assigned berth for the program since 2017.
  • Canada West First Team All-Star and Player of the Year Ruby Nicholas leads the Vikes in goals, assists and points with eight, seven, and 15 in the respective categories.
  • Canada West Second Team All-Star Sophie Fingarson sits in second on the Vikes with four goals, four assists, and eight points through league play and playoffs.
  • Kayley Lidstone and the Vikes' defence posted their sixth shutout of the year in the 1-0 semifinal win over Calgary. The Vikes posted back-to-back clean sheets in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds to open the conference playoffs. Lidstone has tallied 65 saves on the season.
  • Victoria faces OUA champion Ottawa in the quarterfinal round. The Gee-Gees are 11-1 on the year, with their lone loss coming against Toronto, Sept. 21 (1-0).
  • The Vikes finished fifth and sixth at the 2017 and 2019 U SPORTS championships, respectively, and look to claim their first national medal since a bronze medal showing at the 2012 tournament and first national title since 2005.
