Men's basketball closes weekend with win over UNBC

VICTORIA - Taking the lead and never looking back, the University of Victoria men's basketball team defeated the University of Northern British Columbia, 92-62, Nov. 9 at CARSA Performance Gym to complete the weekend sweep.
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Vikes hold Timberwolves to under 20 points in each of the first two quarters
  • Back and forth through the opening minutes, the Vikes began separate over the final six of the first quarter. A 14-6 run on seven points from Diego Maffia, three from Renoldo Robinson, and a bucket each from Ethan Boag and Dylan Gage put the Vikes in front, 20-12, after the opening 10 minutes of play.
  • A Boag jumper to start the second quarter gave the Vikes a 10-point lead, 22-12, 10 seconds in.
  • Allowing 19 points to UNBC while scoring 28 in the second quarter, the Vikes went in to halftime with a 48-31 lead.
Vikes continue to expand lead in second half; close out win
  • Opening the third quarter scoring was a Boag dunk, and was followed by a Griffin Arnatt three that pushed the Vikes' lead to over 20, 53-31, with 8:45 to play in the frame.
  • Back-to-back three's from Geoffrey James and a pair of free throws by Robinson extended the Vikes' lead to 77-48 at the end of the third quarter.
  • A dunk from Shadynn Smid in the early minutes of the fourth quarter brought the Vikes' lead into 30-point territory, 81-50. Remaining in front for the remainder of the fourth, the Vikes came away with the 92-62 win.
WORTH NOTING
  • Diego Maffia led the Vikes with a season-high 35 points, adding four steals, two rebounds, and one assist in the win.
  • Shadynn Smid added 13 points, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal for the Vikes, while Sergio Pereira led the Victoria with nine rebounds.
  • The 92-point performance marks the fourth-straight game the Vikes have scored at least 90 points this season.
  • The Vikes move to 4-0 on the year with the win, while the Timberwolves fall to 0-4.
