Edmonton, Alta. – The University of Victoria men's basketball team defeated MacEwan University, 87-58, Feb. 10 in the Dr. David W. Atkinson Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Diego Maffia and Shadynn Smid combined for the first 14 Vikes points, with Maffia scoring eight points and Smid scoring six, giving Victoria a 14-4 lead with 6:58 to go in the first quarter.
- With a jumper from Izzy Helman in the final 20 seconds, the Vikes held a 30-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. Maffia recorded 18 of the Vikes' 30 points.
- Using a 13-0 run to add a bigger cushion to their lead in the second quarter, a Smid dunk, two Maffia layups, a Griffin Arnatt three and two more layups from Elias Ralph and Renoldo Robinson brought the Vikes' lead to 49-21 with four minutes to go until halftime.
- Drilling a three at the buzzer, Robinson sent the Vikes into the break with a 63-24 lead.
- An 8-0 run from the Griffins in the third quarter brought the Vikes' lead down to 71-36 before a pair of free throws by Maffia ended the Vikes' scoreless streak with 6:09 to go, 73-36.
- Ethan Boag's layup in the final 30 seconds of the quarter gave the Vikes a 40-point lead, 81-41, heading into the final quarter of action.
- The Vikes' fourth quarter scoring was limited to just two baskets from Ryan Gallagher and a jumper from Renoldo Robinson, but Victoria still came away with the 87-58 win.
WORTH NOTING
- Maffia led the Vikes with 27 points, also posting team-highs in assists (4) and steals (3) in the win.
- Robinson and Smid each finished with 14 points, marking a new career-high for Smid.
- Sergio Pereira led the Vikes in rebounds and blocks with seven and two, respectively, adding four points in 19 minutes on the floor.
- The Vikes end the weekend at 15-3 overall, while MacEwan drops to 0-20.
