Vikes post clean sheet with win over Trinity Western

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria women's soccer team shutout Trinity Western University, 1-0, Sept. 29 at Centennial Stadium to close the weekend.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Lidstone keeps it scoreless at the half
  • Kayley Lidstone recorded four of her six saves in the first half, highlighted by a save in 39th minute. On a Trinity Western corner kick, the ball went inside the six-yard box, and a quick back kick from the Spartans aimed to catch the goalkeeper off guard, but Lidstone had her eye on the ball the entire time, making the save to keep the game scoreless and send it to halftime with a 0-0 scoreline.
Olcen nearly wins it
  • A free kick awarded to the Vikes just outside the box in the 69th minute gave the Vikes a scoring opportunity, but the header by Sophie Olcen went just wide of the goal and the game remained scoreless.
Nicholas records second-straight game-winner
  • Ruby Nicholas scored the game-winner in the 76th minute. Malia Phelan knocked the ball away from the TWU defender at the top of the box, allowing Nicholas to swoop in, take one touch and fire off her shot to seal the 1-0 win for the Vikes.
FROM THE PITCH - Kayley Lidstone
On the game:
"It was the first shutout of the season, so that feels really good. Our back line deserved it, they've been working really hard so it's nice to get that. It's super nice to beat that team, they're always a tough battle. I think it just proves that we deserve that second place standing in Canada West right now."

On if there are any nerves in close games:
"I have full confidence in my back line, especially today. There wasn't a moment of non-focus. No nerves, just all adrenaline and energy."

WORTH NOTING
  • Ruby Nicholas' goal marked her seventh of the year, moving her into second place on the Canada West goal scoring leaderboard.
  • Malia Phelan's assist marked her first point as a Vike.
  • The Spartans finished with a 9-6 advantage in shots, and 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
  • Kayley Lidstone finished with six saves in the clean sheet, while the shutout marked the first for Lidstone and the Vikes this season.
  • Victoria improves to 5-1-3 on the year with the win, while Trinity Western now sits at 4-2-2 on the season.
