Men's soccer finishes weekend with win over Trinity Western

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria men's soccer team defeated Trinity Western University, 1-0, Sept. 7 at Centennial Stadium to close its home weekend.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Vikes win it in the first 30 minutes Weir keeps the Vikes in front
  • Four second half saves from Vikes goalkeeper Callum Weir preserved the 1-0 score in favour of Victoria.
Cornwell makes first start as a Vike
  • Though he's appeared in two matches prior, first year Tristan Cornwell made his first start as a Vike against the Spartans, playing all 90 minutes.
FROM THE PITCH - Larry Stefanek
"It was a great effort by our guys. We really talked about starting well in the first half, which we did, so the fairly early goal was a huge boost. We talked about just playing simple tonight, just keeping the ball like we've been doing all season, because it kind of got away from us last night, especially in the first half. And we came out and did that tonight in the first half, against a really good team that's well organized, athletic, and plays really nice football. The first half was huge for us today and gave us a lot of confidence. The guys who came off the bench in the second half really put in a shift as well. All in all, a good weekend."

  • With Harry Ritter West recording a goal, eight different Vikes have found the back of the net through six matches, totalling 13 goals.
  • TWU held the edge in shots taken, 9-6, though the two sides finished equal in shots on goal with five each.
  • Callum Weir recorded a season-high five saves in the win, including four in the second half.
  • The Vikes move to 4-0-2 on the year with the win, while the Spartans drop to 0-3-1.
