Calgary, AB – The University of Victoria men's soccer team travelled to Calgary to take on Mount Royal University in the semi-final round of the Canada West Championships on Oct. 26, hosted by the Cougars. The Vikes were defeated 10-9 in a penalty kick shootout after extra time ended in a 3-3 tie.
Vikes found the net first
- In the 17th minute, Alex Moody came streaking down the field and finished a beautiful give-and-go with Yassin Guitouni. Moody's first postseason goal this season made the game 1-0 for the Vikes.
Cougars answered back fast
- Mount Royal wasted no time, as less than one minute after the Vikes took a 1-0 lead, the Cougars found the back of the net for a game-tying goal.
MRU took their first lead of the match
- Mount Royal pleased their home crowd as they grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 30th minute of the match.
Vikes were quick with the equalizer
- Matteo Hilton blasted a shot from outside the box, and it was too much for the Cougars' goalie to handle. Hilton's first goal of the game brought the game back to a 2-2 tie as the game headed for halftime.
Hilton put the Vikes ahead in the 61st minute
- Matteo Hilton from outside the box again, buried his second of the game to put the Vikes ahead 3-2 and steal the game's momentum.
Dramatically, MRU tied the match 3-3 in the 90th minute
- The Cougars refused to have their season end in regulation time as they buried a game-tying goal as the game headed for injury time.
We headed back to penalty kicks for the second straight game.
- Penalty kicks were tense as Mount Royal continued to score, and the Vikes matched each time. It all came down to the goalies as each needed to be a shooter.
- The Cougars keeper scored on his attempt, and Callum Weir sent his just high.
With the loss, the Vikes have been eliminated from the single-knockout 2025 Canada West Championships. The Vikes finished the regular season with an impressive 10-3-2 record and advanced to the conference semi-finals, a finish that may sting, but a season that should be viewed with pride.
