Women's Rugby
U SPORTS Championship, October 29-November 2, Vancouver, BC
  • Game Day 1: Vikes vs Ottawa, October 29 at 11 a.m.
  • Game Day 2: October 31, semi-finals at 4 p.m. & 6:30 p.m. or consolation games at 11 a.m. & 1:0 p.m.
  • Final Game Day: November 2, fifth-place game at 11 a.m., followed by the bronze-medal match at 1:30 p.m. and the championship at 4 p.m.
 
Canada West Championship Recap:
  • The University of Victoria women's rugby team were victorious in defeating the University of British Columbia 18-17 and captured the Canada West Championship.
  • The Vikes went on the attack early as Carissa Norsten touched the ball down in the try zone to put the Vikes ahead 5-0 in the Championship game.
  • Already ahead 5-0, the Vikes added a penalty goal off the foot of reliable kicker Olivia Newsome to push the lead out further to 8-0.
  • In the 35th minute of the game, UBC cut into the Vikes' lead, scoring a try of their own to bring the score to 8-5.
  • In the final minute of the first half, Olivia Newsome added another important penalty goal, pushing the Vikes' halftime lead to 11-5.
  •  UBC battled back in the second half with back-to-back tries and one convert to take the lead 17-11 with only ten minutes to play.
  • In the 74th minute, with the Championship on the line, Kira Smed forced her way into the Thunderbirds' try zone for her first try of the game. Olivia Newsome nailed her ever-important two-point convert to propel the Vikes in front 18-17.

Canada West Championship Recap:
  • The Vikes completed a historic comeback against conference rivals UBC.
  • With the Vikes down 2-0 with ten minutes to play, the Vikes refused to quit. The Vikes broke through as Libby Hogg blasted a shot off a penalty corner. Her shot was redirected by Brontë Thurbide past the Thunderbirds' keeper. The goal narrowed the UBC lead to 2-1 with ten minutes left to play.
  •  With the goalie pulled, the Vikes were awarded another penalty corner. The ball was passed to Libby Hogg, who directed a shot towards the net. The shot was initially saved and caused a scramble in front of the Thunderbirds' net. With all the bodies in front of the net, Amanda Adams was able to find the ball and put it in the back of the net and bringing the game to a 2-2 tie.

Last Week Recap:
  • The University of Victoria men's basketball team defeated Trinity Western University 98-91 for their home opener.
  • The Vikes came out with energy and propelled themselves to a 25-19 lead after the first quarter.
  • On the back of Shadynn Smid and his stellar play, the Vikes took a 44-38 lead to the locker room at halftime.
  • More of the same for the Vikes in the second half. The Spartans were limited to only six three-pointers as the Vikes played tenacious defence.
  • Shadynn Smid's career night was highlighted by an emphatic dunk in the fourth quarter, which brought the arena to its feet.
  • In game two of the weekend, the University of Victoria men's basketball team went on the road and bested the University of Fraser Valley 84-76.
  • The game began as a high-scoring offensive battle as the Vikes clung to a 46-41 lead as the game headed for halftime.
  • The Cascades made the game tighter as they battled in the third quarter. After three, the game stood 65-63 for the Vikes.
  • Slaymaker, Boag, Smid, and Robinson all scored in double figures as the Vikes closed the game out in the fourth quarter, shooting 49.1% from the field.
  • The Vikes held the Cascades to 13 fourth-quarter points, securing the road victory.
  • The Vikes are 9-1 in their last 10 matchups against UBC and 22-2 in program history.

  • In the first game of the weekend, the University of Victoria women's basketball team fell 76-67 to Trinity Western University.
  • The Vikes came out red-hot to begin their first Canada West regular season game, outscoring the Spartans 21-10 in the first quarter.
  • The Vikes' hot start was majorly contributed to by shooting 47.1% from the field in the first quarter.
  • TWU closed the gap as they found their range in the second quarter. The Spartans came all the way back to lead 33-32 as the game headed for halftime.

  • In the second game, the Vikes were defeated 65-62 by the University of Fraser Valley.
  • The Vikes ended the first quarter down 20-17 but rallied in the second quarter to secure a 36-33 lead as the game headed for halftime.
  • The shooting woes were the story in this game as the Vikes struggled. The Vikes struggled to find their range as they shot 30.1% from the field and 22.2% from behind the arc.
  • Eden Henderson was a bright spot for the Vikes as she came off the bench to drop 13 points in a career high 29 minutes.
  • The Vikes will host UBCO in a historically favourable matchup. The Vikes are 8-3 in games against UBCO in Victoria.

Last Game:
  • The Vikes travelled to Vancouver, BC, to take on the UBCOB Ravens Rugby Club. The men's team was defeated 33-21 in a hard-fought battle.
  • The men's rugby teams' next matchup will come against Burnaby, a club the Vikes defeated 41-31 in their last matchup.
  • This will be the last game before the Vikes head to Montreal, QC, for the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship.
