"We are so incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support and generosity from our Vikes community. This year's fundraising success, marked by an increase in both donors and funds, reflects the deep commitment to our student-athletes. Together, we can purchase vital equipment, provide transformative experiences and build a stronger, more inclusive future," said
Jamie Garrett, acting associate director, sport compliance and student support.
As the impetus behind Vikes Giving Day, the men's rowing program, who have a storied fundraising tradition, once again led the way with unique donors, securing 330 gifts and raising $110,136
. The national champion women's rowing team followed closely behind, surpassing their goal by over $20,000 with 124 gifts and a total of $68,459.
Twelve Vikes programs raised more than they did last year, including the women's and men's basketball teams who both saw substantial increases, each raising upwards of $18,000 compared to Vikes Giving Day 2024.
For the women's basketball team, this support directly advances the role of women in sport. As one of Canada's only programs with an all-female coaching staff—all former university players—they are dedicated to developing future leaders and expanding opportunities for women in coaching.
"After highlighting the gap in funds raised between our men's and women's programs, we saw a surge in support that made a significant impact. The reality is that women's sports continue to face disparities when it comes to fundraising, and Vikes Giving Day is a powerful reminder of the work still ahead. Every donation directly supports our athletes, strengthens women's coaching opportunities through our 5-for-5 program, and ensures our all-female coaching staff has the resources needed to develop the next generation of leaders in sport," said Carrie Watts, women's basketball head coach.
The Vikes swimming program also saw a 30% increase this year, which will also support dedicated female assistant coaches and promote equity and representation in coaching roles.
For the men's rugby team, student-athletes and friends stepped up in a big way by pledging and donating 60 pints of blood to their
Giving Blood for Giving Day campaign, directly supporting Canadian Blood Services and saving lives along the way.
While Vikes Giving Day was a massive success, only seven programs reached their fundraising goals, highlighting the continued need for resources and financial support.
The UVic Department of Athletics and Recreation relies heavily on the generosity of donor support, and while the Vikes Championship Breakfast continues to be the department's largest annual fundraiser, having generated $8 million over the last 16 years for student-athlete scholarships, Vikes Giving Day is another opportunity to engage those interested in supporting specific varsity and club programs and their fundraising efforts.
All contributions made during this event will immediately improve the lives of UVic student-athletes who are making a significant impact on and off the court, field, and course.
