Vikes take back-and-forth contest with WolfPack to complete weekend sweep

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria men's basketball team came out on top in a back-and-forth contest with Thompson Rivers University, taking the 73-64 win to complete the weekend sweep, Feb. 8 at CARSA Performance Gym.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Vikes and WolfPack swap leads in first half
  • Ethan Boag's three put the first points of the game on the board, but was met by 10-straight TRU points to give the visiting side a 10-3 lead at the halfway point of the first quarter.
  • After Ryan Gallagher's bucket was met by one from the WolfPack, the Vikes scored the next 17 points, culminating in three-straight Vikes three-pointers from Renoldo Robinson and Geoffrey James for the 22-12 lead with 34 seconds still on the clock.
  • One final bucket from TRU with eight seconds left brought first quarter score to 22-14 in favour of the Vikes.
  • Though the Vikes remained ahead for the first half of the second quarter, eight-straight TRU points pulled the visiting side even, 30-30, with three minutes to go until halftime.
  • Two consecutive three's by WolfPack in the final 34 seconds gave them a 36-33 lead at halftime.
WolfPack takes third quarter before Vikes fight back in fourth
  • The Vikes took the lead once again to open the third quarter, going ahead 40-36 at the 8:24 mark on a Boag three, Gallagher jumper, and Sam Maillet dunk.
  • Victoria remained in front until the five-minute mark, when the WolfPack scored nine unanswered points over the next two minutes to take the 50-46 lead with three minutes to go in the third.
  • Maillet and Robinson combined for six more points for the Vikes over the final minutes, but Thompson Rivers held the 56-52 advantage heading into the final frame.
  • Starting to break away in the fourth, a Gallagher layup, James jumper, Sergio Pereira free throws and a Maillet layup put the Vikes up by five, 64-57, with 4:46 to go.
  • Not relinquishing the lead in the final minutes, the Vikes came away with the 73-64 win. 
WORTH NOTING
  • Renoldo Robinson was the Vikes' top scorer with 22 points in the win, adding seven rebounds and two assists.
  • Ryan Gallagher and Geoffrey James each finished with 11 points, while Ethan Boag added 10 for the Vikes.
  • Sergio Pereira led the Vikes' rebounding efforts with nine, also tallying a team-high three blocks.
  • Sam Maillet added eight points, six rebounds, and a team-high four assists in the win.
  • The Vikes improve to 18-0 on the year with the win, while the WolfPack move to 10-10.
