Vikes open season with loss to Spartans

Victoria, BC - The University of Victoria women's soccer team opened the season with a 2-1 loss against Trinity Western University, Aug. 22 at home at Centennial Stadium.

Taiya Scorey ties it up:
  • TWU struck first at the 16th minute, but the Vikes responded before halftime. Taiya Scorey connected on an assist from Brianne McLeish in the 36th minute to tie it up in the first half.
Trinity scores in the final minute of the game:
  • The Vikes fought hard in the second half but where unable to close it out. In the final minute of the additional time, Trinity scored to bring the final score to 2-1.
Notables:
  • Goalkeeper Stefanie Mocnik made her Vikes debut, recording six saves.
  • Scarlett McNeely also made her Vikes debut, starting the game in the midfield and leading the team with three shots. 
  • The Vikes kept it a close game despite Trinity having 13 corner opportunities to the Vikes 2.
  • At the end of the night the Spartans had 11 shots to the Vikes seven.
  • With the win, Trinity starts the season off at 1-0-0, while the Vikes sit at 0-1-0.
The Vikes return to action tomorrow, Aug. 23, against Fraser Valley at 3:30pm at Centennial Stadium.
