Vikes shutout Cascades for first win of the season

Victoria, B.C. – The University of Victoria women's soccer team captured their first win of the 2025 Canada West season with a 5-0 shutout of the University of the Fraser Valley, Aug. 23 at Centennial Stadium.
 
Scorey puts the Vikes in front
  • On a Vikes free kick, Brianne McLeish was able to direct her header to Taiya Scorey, who connected inside the six-yard box to put the Vikes ahead 1-0 in the 14th minute. 
Kopp scores first career goal to double UVic's lead
  • Earning a corner in the 18th minute, Adrianna Hilton's kick connected with Alice Kopp in front of the net, who in turn struck it over the line for the 2-0 Vikes lead.
McNeely, McLeish give Vikes 4-0 lead at the half
  • In the 34th minute, Ruby Nicholas found Scarlett McNeely, who took one dribble to create some space and fired a high shot to the top right corner of the net for the 3-0 Vikes lead.
  • With less than one minute to play in the first half, McNeely sent a long pass downfield and found Brianne McLeish, who finished off her run with a goal to give Victoria a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Nicholas seals Vikes' win at 5-0
  • Taken down in the box in the 50th minute, Ruby Nicholas stepped up to the spot to take the penalty shot she earned for the Vikes. Successful on her attempt, the goal brought the final score to 5-0 in favour of the Vikes to clinch their first win of the season.
Notables
  • Taiya Scorey has now scored in both games for the Vikes, bringing her season goal total to two.
  • Alice Kopp and Scarlett McNeely each scored their first career goals as Vikes in the win, while Ruby Nicholas and Brianne McLeish each recorded their firsts of the season.
  • Stefanie Mocnik earned her first win in goal for the Vikes, while she and Isabel Humphries combined for the first clean sheet of the Vikes' season.
  • The four first-half goals mark the most first half goals for the Vikes since four were scored in the first half at UBCO, Sept. 27, 2015 in a 5-1 victory.
  • With the win, the Vikes improve to 1-1-0 on the year, while Fraser Valley drops to 0-2-0.
