Vikes force a shootout in season finale

Vancouver, BC – The University of Victoria women's field hockey team closed out its 2026 season by pushing the Canada West champions to the limit, earning a 2-2 draw with the UBC Thunderbirds before falling 3-0 in a shootout on Oct. 25 at Wright Field.

The Vikes took control early and built a two-goal advantage.
  • Victoria broke through late in the second quarter after a scramble in front of goal. Multiple attempts kept the play alive before Antonia Hodar found space and fired home the opening goal.
  • The Vikes doubled their lead early in the third quarter. After earning back-to-back penalty corners, Rebecca Stone blasted a long-range effort into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.
  • Victoria's strong defensive play and organized structure frustrated the conference champions through the opening three quarters.

UBC rallied late, but the Vikes battled to the final whistle.
  • The Thunderbirds got on the board late in the third quarter before finding the equalizer with just three minutes remaining in regulation.
  •  Victoria continued to defend soundly and forced the match into a shootout despite sustained pressure from the hosts.
  • The Vikes were unable to convert in the shootout as UBC claimed a 3-0 shootout victory.

Notables
  • Victoria concluded the regular season with a 4-2-2 conference record.

This result marks the end of the Vikes' 2026 campaign. Victoria will return to action in the fall of 2027 to begin a new Canada West season.
