Vikes rally late to fend of the Timberwolves

Victoria, BC – The University of Victoria men's basketball team completed a weekend sweep of the UNBC Timberwolves with an 88-77 victory on Nov. 7 at CARSA Performance Gym.

UNBC's size created problems early for the Vikes.
  • The Timberwolves controlled the offensive glass for much of the night, generating second-chance opportunities and preventing Victoria from fully pulling away.
  • Will Keyes was particularly effective around the basket, finishing with 18 points and 14 rebounds while repeatedly extending possessions for UNBC.
  • The Vikes trailed at halftime, a position unfamiliar to Burnatowski's squads.

The game turned in the fourth quarter.
  • UNBC remained within striking distance entering the final frame after outscoring the Vikes 29-21 in the second quarter and continuing to battle throughout the third.
  • Victoria found another gear offensively in the closing minutes as its three-point shooting began to fall consistently.
  • The Vikes knocked down 12 triples in the game and scored 26 fourth-quarter points to finally create separation.

Victoria's balanced attack kept the Vikes in front.
  • Ryan Regault led the offence with 18 points and nine assists, orchestrating a Victoria attack that recorded 20 assists on 36 made field goals.
  • Cole Bekkering added 17 points, while Shadynn Smid contributed 13 points.
  • Cam Slaymaker and Tyler Felt each chipped in 11 points as all Vikes starters reached double figures.

Notables
  • Ryan Regault finished one assist shy of a double-double with 18 points and nine assists, a breakout game as the quarterback of the Vikes' offence.
  • The Vikes completed a weekend sweep and improved to 3-1 while the Timberwolves fell to 0-4.

The Vikes will head on the road to face the Mount Royal Cougars on Nov. 13 and 14 for a weekend series.
