Calgary, AB – The University of Victoria men's basketball team captured the U SPORTS bronze medal in an 85-81 win over Toronto Metropolitan University, March 8 at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
TMU grabbed the first lead.
- The Bold went on the first scoring run of the game, grabbing the first lead as they led the Vikes 17-9 at the first media timeout.
- Renoldo Robsinson willed the Vikes back into the game as he dropped nine of the Vikes' 18 points as the first quarter closed with TMU ahead 21-18.
Victoria dialled in their three-point shooting to overtake TMU.
- Geoffrey James and Dylan Gage's three-point shooting propelled the Vikes' offence to a scoring run that saw the Vikes grab their first lead.
- Shadynn Smid, Robinson, and James were playing swarming defence, each securing a steal in the midst of the Vikes' scoring run.
- The scoring picked up, and the Vikes carried a one-point lead into halftime as the first half ended 44-43.
Back-and-forth third quarter set up thrilling finish.
- Both teams were firing offensively in the third, making for a high-scoring quarter that saw the Bold clinging to a 70-67 lead with only the fourth left to play.
- Shadynn Smid was getting to his spots at will, leading the Vikes in scoring with his 17 points through three quarters.
Victoria prevails to claim the bronze medal.
- The Vikes showed their veteran makeup in the fourth, leaning on their starters. The Vikes saw themselves tied with TMU at 79 with four minutes left to play.
- With a bronze medal on the line, Victoria began a 6-2 run and iced the game in the clutch moments to claim the 85-81 victory.
- Shaydnn Smid earned Player of the Game honours as he led the Vikes with 19 points.
This concludes an ultra-successful season for the Vikes men's basketball team in which they captured the Canada West title and U SPORTS bronze medal.
