Vizsolyi joins Victoria Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026

VICTORIA - University of Victoria Vikes longtime head coach Peter Vizsolyi will be inducted into the Victoria Sports Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026. One of eight inductees this year, Vizsolyi will be honoured in the builder/coach category at the induction ceremony on Nov. 7, 2026 — a fitting recognition for one of the most influential figures in Canadian swimming.

Over a remarkable 41-year career leading the Vikes swim program, Vizsolyi has left an indelible mark not only on the athletes he coached, but on the sport of swimming in Victoria and across B.C. One of the longest-tenured university coaches in the country, he built a program defined by sustained excellence, while helping generations of student-athletes reach their full potential in and out of the pool.

Vizsolyi's impact goes far beyond the medal count, though that alone is impressive. His athletes have gone on to compete on the world stage, including the Olympic and Paralympic Games, World Championships, and Commonwealth Games, earning dozens of international medals along the way. At UVic, his teams consistently performed at the highest level, collecting hundreds of national and U SPORTS medals.

Beyond his coaching achievements, Vizsolyi's role as a builder and leader in the sport has been just as significant. As Sport Chair for the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, he played a central role in shaping both the competition and its lasting legacy, including the development of Saanich Commonwealth Place as a premier aquatic facility. In the years that followed, his work on the High-Performance User Committee and the Operating Agreement Review Board helped ensure the venue continued to meet the needs of both elite athletes and the broader community.

A highly respected voice in sport governance, Vizsolyi has contributed extensively at the provincial and national levels through Swim BC, Swimming Canada, and the Canadian Swimming Coaches Association, where he has spent more than two decades on the Board of Directors. He has also made a lasting impact on coach development as a professor, lecturer, and Master Coach with the National Coaching Institute, mentoring generations of coaches who continue to shape the sport across Canada and beyond.

Known for his dedication, work ethic and and genuine care for his athletes, Vizsolyi's legacy is as much about people as it is about performance. His work has helped grow swimming in Victoria into the thriving community it is today, inspiring countless young athletes to get involved in the sport.

This Hall of Fame induction is a well-deserved honour for someone who has dedicated a lifetime to building the sport and supporting those within it.
