Victoria, BC – The University of Victoria women's soccer team played Thompson Rivers University to a 0-0 draw in their annual Thunderfest game and season opener on Aug. 11 at Centennial Stadium.
Both teams got off to a slow start.
- With nearly 5,000 fans on hand, neither side found much attacking rhythm in a slow opening 45 minutes. The chances were limited at both ends as the teams battled through a tightly contested midfield.
- The story of the first half was the defensive play preventing any sustained offensive pressure. The sides entered halftime scoreless, deadlocked at 0-0.
Neither team was able to find the scoresheet as the goalies stood tall.
- The Vikes made a push in the last 30 minutes, but each quality shot sailed wide or over the net.
- In the dying seconds of the game, TRU found themselves with the best chance of the game, but the shot flew just over the crossbar, finalizing the scoreless game.
Notables:
- Stefanie Mocnik earned her first clean sheet of the season.
- The Vikes start the season 0-0-1, while the WolfPack improve to 2-0-1.
The Vikes will return to action Sunday, Sep. 13, to take on the Trinity Western Spartans back at Centennial Stadium.
