University of Victoria Athletics

Vancouver, BC – The University of Victoria men's soccer team battled the nation's top-ranked University of British Columbia en route to 2-2 draw on Sep. 19 at Thunderbird Stadium.
 
Morales Moya struck first.

• The Vikes were not intimidated by the undefeated UBC Thunderbirds, as they were the first on the attack. In the 15^th minute, Griffin Leach forced a turnover around midfield, sparking a Vikes odd-man rush. Owen Lemmer, streaking down the sideline, crossed a pass into the box that evaded a diving goalkeeper. The ball bounced through Thunderbirds' defenders and onto the foot of Felipe Morales Moya, who directed it into the open goal. The Vikes grabbed the 1-0 lead in this provincial rivalry game.
• Callum Weir continued his strong play as he kept the Thunderbirds scoreless in the first half.

 
A flurry of goals in the second half.

• The second half was a back-and-forth affair that saw the Vikes take a 2-0 lead off a set piece. The play had a Vikes' cross sent into the box but cleared high in the air by a UBC defender. The ball was tracked down by Evan Larson, and he delivered a powerful shot from far beyond the box. The shot seemed to take everyone by surprise as it sailed into the bottom corner of the net untouched.
• UBC began to get their offensive unit going as the Thunderbirds were able to solve Weir in the 66^th and 79^th minutes to bring the game level at two.

 
Notables:

• With the tie, the Vikes move to 3-2-1 and the Thunderbirds to 6-0-2.

 
The Vikes will head east to battle the Saskatchewan Huskies on Sep. 26 at 12 p.m.
