Biography
The University of Victoria women's rowing head coach Rick Crawley guided the team to their ninth Canadian University Rowing Championship (CURC) title in 14 years. The Vikes rowing crew also won the Western Rowing Championship.

The Vikes struck gold at the Western Canadian Championships, sweeping the lightweight events and winning the women’s eight. Victories continued as the lightweight coxed four crew as Sarah Krauetner, Renae Barks, Alex Meiklejohn, Ingrid Braul and Leanne Fells captured gold. Fells and Meiklejohn later won the women’s lightweight doubles, while Braul won the lightweight single. Vikes, Krauetner, Alex Marchuk, Nora Griffiths, Kasia Gwiazda and Claire McCormick, also stole the gold medal in the heavyweight four giving them a 20-15 aggregate point total victory over the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds.

Heading into the CURCs the Vikes sat comfortably after defending their Western Championship title. The Vikes hosted the 2010 CURCs at Elk Lake in Victoria, BC. Barks, Braul and Meiklejohn lead the way for the lightweights, while Anjte von Seydlitz-Kurzbach, Lara Kemp, McCormick and Marchuk were key heavyweight contenders.

The Vikes women’s lightweight coxed four clinched the team title with a gold medal performance. A crew of Barks, Fells, Braul, Meiklejohn and Krauetner crossed the line at 7:34.92, a full eight second ahead of second place Queens (7:42.92).

Vikes sophomore Braul’s from Vancouver, BC posted a winning time of 8:10.62 to take the women’s lightweight single event. UBC came second at a time of 8:12.90, followed by Queen’s University who clocked in at 8:13.61.

The combination of Fells and Meiklejohn wrapped up the lightweight victories with a gold medal in the women’s lightweight double (7:56.21).  UBC came in second (8:06.77) and Queens finished third (8:10.46).

In her CURC debut, Vikes rookie Barks finished third in the women’s open single (7:53.25), just behind Ottawa and Western who took first and second place.

Adding to the point-total, the Vikes women’s open coxed eight finished third to capture the bronze with a time of 6:58.82. University Western defended their title with a time of 6:48.20, followed by Brock University who clocked in at 6:56.73 to take silver.

The Vikes stole the show with 108 points to capture their ninth Canadian University Rowing Championship, as head coach Crawley completed his 27th year at UVic.

In the spring of the 2010-2011 season the Vikes women went head-to-head in the annual Brown Cup Challenge against the UBC Thunderbirds. In a grueling 3500-meter race, modeled off the historic Oxford – Cambridge eight-oared boat competition, the women captured their 17th victory in 18 meetings with the Thunderbirds.

Even with a steering error, that took the Vikes boat through the wrong bridge-span, the UVic women were able to adjust and cruise to the finish line. UVic finish the 3.5 kilometer race in 11:10.97, while UBC cross the line at 11:56.04, about 45 seconds behind the Vikes.
