BIOGRAPHY

The legendary Ken Shields coached the 1982-83 Vikings, the University of Victoria men’s basketball team, to an unparalleled fourth consecutive CIAU title as they made the trek back east to beat the University of Waterloo Warriors 63-52 in the championship final. 
 
The team was entirely unbeaten throughout the regular season with an impressive record of 10-0, outscoring Canada West opponents 908-690. The UVic men earned Canada West Champion honours after defeating the University of Alberta Golden Bears in Edmonton to earn a berth to the Final Four showdown in Waterloo. Four Vikings were named to the Canada West first and second All-Star teams that year, Eli Pasquale, Gerald Kazanowski, Kelly Dukeshire and Tom Narbeshuber.
 
After earning their ticket to the 1983 Final Four tournament, hosted by the University of Waterloo, the UVic men played a tight game against St. Mary’s University to win the semifinal by a mere five points, 66-61. Challenging the hosts, the Waterloo Warriors, for the right to be crowned CIAU Champions, the Vikings proved themselves the better team with a 63-52 victory. Pasquale was deemed CIAU Tournament MVP and named to the tournament’s All-Star team alongside teammate Kazanowski. Shields was named both Canada West and CIAU Coach of the Year, while Pasquale and Kazanowski were given First Team All-Canadian status, Dukeshire was named a Second Team All-Canadian.
