Biography Led by head coach
Bruce Wilson, in his 24th season, the University of Victoria men's soccer team went on an incredible August to November campaign that culminated in capturing the program's fifth Sam Davidson Memorial Trophy.
In pre-season, the Vikes were undefeated with five wins and one tie against local league teams as well as Peninsula College and the Vancouver Island University Mariners. Boasting a squad of 27, Wilson used the Canada West season to highlight his final 18-man roster for the CIS National Championships.
With the automatic berth, the Vikes knew that their placing in the Canada West would affect only their seeding going into the national tournament. The Vikes looked to be in trouble when they kicked off their season with a rough 4-0 loss to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, a team that would go on to be undefeated for nine consecutive games. The following night the Vikes then lost to powerhouse Trinity Western University Spartans. Determined to rebound and prove their mettle, the Vikes tied the University of Alberta Golden Bears the next weekend and from there went on a 12 game win streak, catapulting them into the top seed for the Canada West Final Four showdown.
Despite their veteran-laden roster, the Vikes had some excellent performances from rookies
Cam Hundal (Terrace, B.C. ),
Craig Gorman (Victoria, B.C.) and
Thomas Mallette (Trail, B.C.). Additionally, the Vikes had the one-two punch of goalkeepers
Daniel Kilpatrick (Victoria, BC) and
Elliot Mitrou (Victoria, B.C.). Kilpatrick battled illness mid-way through the season and missed six games but Mitrou stepped up to the plate and with stingy netminding earned three straight shutouts at the end of September. Newly-converted defender
Gavin Barrett (Richmond, B.C.) was a consistent holdfast in the backfield alongside third-year
Bobby Eng (Richmond, B.C.) and fourth-year
David Adams (Surrey, B.C.).
The Vikes’ biggest weekend in the regular season came on Oct. 15 when the Vikes defeated the No. 3 ranked Trinity Western Spartans 3-2. The next day, the Vikes squeezed a 1-0 win out of the UBC Thunderbirds, at the time ranked No. 1 in the CIS. That weekend of six points pushed the Vikes into the CIS Top ten polls at No. 8, where they continued to move up to No. 5 the next week and No. 3 the following week.
Finishing first place in the standings, the Vikes hosted the Canada West Final Four featuring UBC, TWU and Alberta. The Vikes lost to Alberta 2-1, missing out on their chance for the Canada West banner. The game cost the team more than the banner as Eng sustained an injury that would see him out for the remainder of the season. Looking for redemption, the Vikes defeated the Spartans 1-0 to earn the Canada West bronze medal.
As host of the 2011 CIS National Championships and looking to win the country's ultimate prize in varsity soccer, the Vikes fought their way to the top of the podium. With over 2,100 fans packing the stands of Centennial Stadium, the Vikes won their first game against the Montreal Carabins by the narrowest of margins. At the end of regulation time, the game was deadlocked at 1-1 with the Vikes' lone goal coming from defender Gavin Barrett. Going into overtime, the Carabins tallied first in the 111th minute, three minutes later another goal from Barrett sent the teams to penalty kicks. Sending the game-winning goal just off the post and in, was Barrett's older brother Wesley.
In semifinal round the Vikes were embroiled in yet another epic battle, this time against Maritime team the Cape Breton University Capers. The UVic men were on the board early thanks to fifth-year
Peter Richmond (Victoria, BC), followed by a goal from Hundal and then a tally by Gorman to end the game 3-2 and earn a ticket to the CIS Championship gold medal match.
The Vikes were unstoppable, defeating the Saint Mary’s University Huskies 3-1 with a phenomenal 30-yarder by Wesley Barrett and another two goals from tournament MVP Hundal. Additionally, four Vikes were named to the Tournament all-star roster, Gavin Barrett, Hundal, Andrew Ravenhill and Jordie Oberg.
Celebrating the team's unbelievable season and electrifying finish, captain
James Rhodes (Victoria, BC)hoisted UVic’s fifth CIS banner as the team doused head coach Bruce Wilson with a bucket of ice water.
