Assistant Coaches: Dave Dew, Bob Stankov

Biography

With Tracy David at the helm, in her fourth year as head coach of the University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer team, the 2005-06 team closed out their Canada West season with 32 points and in second place with a record of 10-4-2. Additionally, three Vikes were named Canada West First Team All-Stars while two were given second team nods. After leading the league in goals, fifth-year Amelie Mercier was voted as Canada West MVP and David was deemed coach of the year.

Advancing to the Canada West Final Four tournament in Calgary, AB, the UVic women took their first game to penalty kicks against the Trinity Western University Spartans. Winning the contest, the Vikes then played hosts, the University of Calgary Dinos, in a nail-biting finish, ending in penalty kicks. Earning a Canada West silver medal, the UVic women lost the title but won a berth to the 2005 CIS Championship in Edmonton, AB.

The Vikes were on a mission and strolled through the single elimination quarter-finals with a shutout win of 1-0 over the York University Lions and qualified for the gold medal game with a semifinal win of 2-1 over the McGill University Martlets.

On Nov. 13, 2005, the UVic Vikes women's soccer team captured their first-ever CIS National title with an impressive and convincing 3-0 victory over the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees.

Goals were scored by Liz Hansen, Canada West MVP Mercier and freshman Janelle Smith. A rock-solid defensive unit permitted just one shot on rookie backstop Kasha Gwiazda, who picked up her third shutout of the tournament.

The team's captain, Carey Gustafson, was named Tournament MVP, placed on the tournament's All-Star team and given All-Canadian second team honours while teammates Amy Thorogood, Hansen and Mercier were also named to the tournament's All-Star team with Mercier earning First TeamAall-Canadian status.
