Biography
The University of Victoria men’s rowing team won the 2009 Canadian University Rowing Championships (CURC) claiming their fifth title at Montreal’s Olympic Basin. Previous to the CURCs the Vikes men’s team defended their Western Championship title.

Rowing at the Bedford Channel in Fort Langley the men’s team went head-to-head with the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds, Simon Fraser University, Trinity Western, Fraser Valley, University of Alberta, University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg at the Western Rowing Championships. With a fairly young roster, the Vikes men’s crew impressively swept the heavyweight events winning the four, pair and single. Their point-total edged out UBC to win the Western title by three points (18-15).

Travelling east to Montreal, the men’s rowing team racked up 95 points to win the CURCs. Points came from the men’s eight, men’s pair, lightweight double and lightweight four.

The Vikes won the only gold in the men’s eight with a time of 6:03.8, edging out UBC by a margin of four seconds. Members of the winning eight included, Josh Morris, Mark Vodden, Erik Johnson, Richard Herlinveaux, Eric Bevan, Pete Brooks, Brent Dallimore and cox Jane Gumley.

A silver medal was captured in the men’s pair with a time of 7:23.4, while two bronze medals in the lightweight double (7:03) and lightweight four (6:51.9) increased the Vikes point-total. Both the lightweight single (7:50) and men’s single (7:59.6) came fourth.

Capturing his fifth Canadian University Championship title, head coach Howard Campbell was named 2009 Coach of the Year

At the 36th annual Elk Lake Spring Regatta, hosted by the Vikes, the UVic men’s eight struck gold with a huge victory of almost two boat lengths. The crew clocked in at 5:40.1, while the Vikes freshman crew surpassed the UBC varsity crew to steal the bronze medal with a time of 5:52.5. The Vikes captured another gold medal in the men’s four with a time of 6:21.2.

In the men’s open pair event, Michael Mason and Bevan finished just shy of Vike alumni and Olympian goal medalist Kevin Light and partner (6:27). Mason and Bevan clocked in at 6:30.1. Similar fate repeated as Tom Watson was nipped at the line by Lake Washington (7:11.6) in the lightweight single. Watson finished second with a time of 7:12.1.

Following the Elk Lake Spring Regatta, the UVic’s eight crew out rowed the UBC Thunderbirds at the annual Brown Cup Challenge with a time of 9:23.14. The men finished with a 13 second lead over the T-Birds, the largest victory margin since 2003.

In its 46th year the University of Victoria’s rowing program was arguably the most accomplished program in Canada with a combined women’s and men’s total of 13 national titles; the program has also sent 94 athletes, coaches and alumni to the Olympic games. The 2009 men’s rowing team captures UVic’s Athletics and Recreation’s 65th Canadian University Championship banner.

International Success
The Vikes rowing program has coached numerous athletes to international success. In the summer after the 2009 varsity season, four former Vikes represented Canada in the men’s eight at the World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland. James Dunaway, Gage Bergen, Doug Csima and Mark Laidlaw captured the silver medal for Canada. The four Canadians finished just behind the winning boat from Germany (5:24.13). Canada finished with a time of 5:27.15, edging the Netherlands to third place with a time of 5:28.32.

Vikes alumni, Sarah Bonikowsky and Romina Stefancic, also represented Canada in the women’s eight who finished sixth at the World Rowing Championships.

Nine Vikes respresented Canada at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Anna-Marie de Zwager and Rachelle de Jong advanced to the semifinals in the women's quad event. Alumni Darcy Marquaft, Buffy Williams, Romina Stefancic and Sarah Bonikowsky were prime contenders in the women's eight's with a fourth place finish. Reaching the podium was alumni Mike Lewis. Lewis and the men's lightweight four members finished third. In an exciting race, alumni Kevin Light and Adam Kreek helped the men's eight take home a gold medal.
