Biography:
The University of Victoria men’s basketball team won the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) national championship once again in the 1981-1982 season. This marked the third consecutive championship for head coach Ken Shields. Notably, the women’s team also won their third national championship that year.
The Vikings completed the season on top of the Canada West charts with only one loss in 20 regular season games. UVic hosted the Canada West finals and defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies twice in a best-of-three series to win the Canada West conference title, securing a berth to the CIAU national championships.
Eli Pasquale and Kelly Dukeshire were named Canada West First Team All-Stars, while Tom Narbeshuber and Gerald Kazanowski were named to the second-team.
At the national championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia, hosted by the Saint Mary’s Huskies, the Vikings buzzed past Saint Francis Xavier in game one only to challenge Manitoba rivals Brandon University Bobcats in game two. The UVic men defeated the Bobcats, advancing to the championship game. The Vikings took on the host team Saint Mary’s Huskies in the gold medal game. In yet another rivalry match, UVic won 74-60, granting another CIAU national championship title.
Two Vikes were named to the All-Canadian team, including guard Pasquale and Gerald Kazanowski. Dukeshire was named CIAU tournament most valuable player (MVP – Jack Donohue trophy). This marked the third consecutive year where a UVic player was honoured as the CIAU MVP.
Coach Shields not only took home his third title with the Vikings, but he was also honoured with the Stuart W. Aberdeen Memorial trophy (coach of the year) for the third time in his career. Shields became the first CIAU coach to win the Stuart W. Aberdeen trophy more than twice (1975-76 Laurentian, 1978-79 UVic & 1981-82 UVic).
