Season Summary In 2003 the University of Victoria men’s golf team captured the first RCGA Canadian University and College Golf Championship, in its inaugural year, with a one-shot victory over Humber College.
A Vikes squad of
Justin Clews, Shelby Dreher, Todd Halpen and
Brian Sluggett travelled to Cambridge, Ontario to play in the championship tournament hosted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association.
Collectively, the UVic men's team shot a low 434, a mere eight points ahead of second place Humber College. The University of British Columbia finished third.
Second-year Halpen’s individual third place finish (215) vaulted the Vikes into prime contention for the overall title. Victoria native and fourth-year Sluggett tied for fifth overall with a score of 218. In the final round of team play, the Vikes had a combined total of 662, edging Humber College into second place by one-stroke.
The UVic men’s golf program, of only three years, made history on March 3, 2003 as they won the ever first RCGA Canadian University and College Championship. Fort St. John native Dreher inaugurated his tradition of wearing yellow pants that season at the championship tournament. Competing so well, his yellow pant tradition continued throughout his five years as a Vike and is a noteworthy statement of this championship tradition team (2003,
2005,
2006).
