(Assistant Coach) BiographyThe University of Victoria men’s rowing team just came off a victorious year winning the 2009 Canadian University Rowing Championships. They began their 2010-11 season successfully considering their young roster.
Key departing athletes included, Doug Csima, Brent Dallimore, Mike Mason and Eric Tremblay.
The Vikes rowing team opened their season competing at the Rowing Canada Championship regatta hosted at Elk Lake in Victoria, BC. “We have a good group of young guys, “ said head coach
Howard Campbell. “The results this weekend show we are no weaker than last year.”
Josh Morris,
Kai Langerfeld,
Eric Bevan,
Pete Brooks,
Richard Herlinveaux,
Niall Paltiel,
Brendan Downey and
Kevin Mitchell rowed a noteworthy men’s eight showcasing the depth of the team.
At the Western Canadian Championships the Vikes lightweight four, Paltiel, Downey, Mitchell,
Jonathan Chandler and cox
Jane Gumley, captured the gold medal, leaving them as prime contenders for the national championship title.
Will O’Connell and partner Herlinveaux won the men’s pair. Unfortunately, the men fell overall to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, who won for the first time since the championship began in 2008. The Vikes lost by a one-point margin (16-15).
The University of Vikes men’s rowing team successfully defended their Canadian University Rowing Championship (CURC) title at the 14
th edition of the championships held at Elk Lake Victoria, BC. This was the seventh time the University of Victoria hosted the rowing championships.
The Vikes men’s team picked up three gold medals and three silver medals. The first gold medal was captured in the heavyweight men’s eight. The winning crew of captain Brooks, Herlinveaux,
Will Odhmans,
Ross Bringold, Anthony Linton, Langerfeld, O’Connell, Beavan and cox Gumley finished the race with a time of 5:54.14. This was the second straight CURC gold medal in the heavyweight men’s eight for the UVic men’s rowing team.
Second- year, Victoria native and under-23 national champion Mitchell also won gold in the men’s lightweight single event with a winning time of 7:33.21.
Parksville native Langerfeld showed no sign of his rookie status as he rowed his way to a winning time of 6:55.07 with men’s open pair teammate, fifth year Herlinveaux. The Vikes beat out east coast rivals University of Western Mustangs who took the silver medal and mainland rivals UBC Thunderbirds who finished third.
Adding to UVic’s point-total was men’s lightweight double crew Paltiel and Downey who finished 0.03 seconds behind the leaders, to capture the silver medal. Victoria Native O’Connell also came home with a silver medal in the men’s open single with a time of 7:40.97.
Paltiel, Downey, Chandler, Mitchell and cox Gumley also successfully finished second with a time of 6:45.06 to secure points in the men’s lightweight coxed four.
By defending their national title, the University of Victoria men’s rowing team holds the most national titles of any school. The Vikes edged Brock University even further away with six titles to Brocks four titles with the 2010 victory.
“This is the best day” – Pete Brooks (team captain)
After the Christmas break the Vikes were back in the water as the Brown Cup Challenge was right around the corner. The UBC Thunderbirds hosted the 2010-11 Brown Cup at the Fraser River in Richmond, BC . In a 3.5-kilometer head-to-head race, the Thunderbirds and Vikes competed in what Vikes head coach
Campbell called, “the tightest and best [race] we have ever had in the history of the event.”
Clashing blades multiple times throughout the race, the UBC and Vikes boats received warnings from the referees to separate. “[Just] off the final bend, the Vikes gained steadily over the last 300-meter sprint to finish with the closest margin ever in what arguably is the best race to date in the Brown Cup,” said Campbell.
Combined, the men’s and women’s varsity rowing teams swept the Thunderbirds in all five races, including all four varsity contests and the alumni race. In 20 regattas with the Thunderbirds, the Vikes have dominated with 17 grueling victories.
International Success Following the 2010-2011 varsity year, three Vike alumni represented Canada at the World University Rowing Championships (WURC). Key departee from the Vikes 2009 championship team,
Michael Mason, competed in the men’s four (HM4-). Mason and his teammates captured the bronze medal with a time of 6:08.28.
Eric Tremblay, another key departee from the Vikes 2009 CURC team rowed to a first place finish with teammate Matt Buie in the men’s pair (HM2-) with a time of 6:46.52.
Doug Csima, Josh Morris and current Vike Kai Langerfeld are all members of the men's national rowing program. Csima won a silver medal for Canada at the 2012 London Olympic Games in the men's coxed eight.
Current UVic rowers captain William O’Connell and assistant captain Alex Walker were selected to represent Canada at the 2013 Under 23 World Rowing Championship in Linz, Austria July 24-28. Walker was also selected for the 2014 World Rowing Championship in Aiguebelette, France. Additonally, O’Connell and Walker helped the Vikes men’s crew capture the 2012 Western Rowing Championship title. At the UVic Celebration of Champions banquet O’Connell was honoured as 2012 Male Athlete of Year and Outstanding Rower of the Year. Walker was named 2012-13 Rookie of the Year for the rowing team.
