Originally from St. Catherine’s, Ont., Patrick Newman was introduced to rowing at an early age by brothers who were already successful coxswains. Newman began coxing in high school and in 1987 was named to the Canadian national rowing team, going on to cox at two Olympic Games. In 1993 Newman won the World Rowing Championships in the lightweight men’s eight.
While training for the 1996 Olympics in Victoria, B.C., Newman received his level four coaching certificate and went on to coach full time at the Gorge Rowing Centre that same year. At the 2000 Olympic Games Newman coached Canadian single sculler Derek Porter and since then, has coached seasonally for Rowing Canada with his crews winning medals at U-23 and Senior World Rowing Championships as well as medals at the Pan American Games.
At present, Newman is in charge of the development rowing program for both men and women at the University of Victoria and in May 2012 his novice women’s eight won the Opening Day Regatta in Seattle, Wash.
