Vikes late surge unable to produce points

VANCOUVER - The UVic Vikes men's soccer team was once again stymied by the UBC Thunderbirds second-to-best defence in a 1-0 defeat on Saturday night. The loss completed the series sweep for the T-Birds, and the Vikes fall to 5-5-1.

UBC Thunderbird Devin Gunenc  provided the home side with the lone goal in the 73rd minute.

The match was chippy as two red cards were handed out in the 52nd minute when UVic's #William Gye# and UBC's Will Hyde each went after a free ball. Both were shown red for their reckless tackles resulting in each player limping to their respective sidelines.

With ten men a side left on the pitch, the play soon opened up and each team began to create scoring opportunities.

The T-Birds broke the deadlock when Gunenc hit his shot off the right goal post past Vikes' keeper #Dan Kilpatrick#.

There were some tense moments late in the match with the Vikes battling hard for an equalizer. The 85th minute saw the Vikes swarm the UBC zone with numbers and put a through ball past the the defence but UBC keeper Nikolai Matni charged and covered the ball. Matni added three saves for his second clean sheet of the season.

The Vikes best chance came four minutes later when #Miguel Romeo# connected with a cross from defender James Rhodes but the ball was sent just wide.

The Vikes will look to recover from this weekend's tough provincial battle when they host the Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday, October 17th at 2:15pm.
