Vikes turn LePage on Alberta's golden run

VICTORIA - #Daniel LePage#'s 70th minute corner kick sailed its way into the net lifting the no. 6 UVic Vikes men's soccer team to a 2-1victory, and ended the no. 3 Alberta Golden bears undefeated run.

Before LePage's game-winner, penalty kicks resulted in goals for both sides. Alberta's Brent Colvin converted from the spot in the 39th minute, before UVic's #Cole McFarlane# followed suit in the 67th minute.

Alberta entered the game with the Canada West's top ranked defence, but McFarlane's PK appeared to rattle them and three minutes later the Golden Bears conceded the game-winning goal. Miscommunication in the back saw LePage's corner kick soar into the net.

"We got down a goal and I give our team credit," Vikes head Coach #Bruce Wilson# said after the match. "We battled or way back in the second half and the win was well deserved."

Vikes 'keeper #Dan Kilpatrick# made six saves, but none bigger than his stop early in the second half that prevented the Golden Bears from taking a two-goal lead. Alberta 'keeper Jaswinder Gill made 12 hard-earned saves in the loss as the 'Bears drop to 4-1-2.

The 4-2-1 Vikes will look to close out the weekend series when they host last year's Keg Spring Cup winner's Saskatchewan Huskies at Centennial Stadium. Kick off is scheduled for Sunday at 2:15pm.
