VANCOUVER – UVic Vikes men's soccer goal keeper #Dan Kilpatrick# made two pivotal saves in penalty kicks to lead the no. 9 Vikes to a 3-2 (4-2 PK) victory over the Alberta Golden Bears in the Canada West conference final on Saturday night.
With the win, the Vikes clinched a berth in next week's CIS Championship and are conference champs for the second consecutive year and 13th time in school history.
The Vikes let a two-goal lead slip away, but prevailed in the shootout after Canada West All-Star 'keeper Dan Kilpatrick came up with two crucial saves. The win is the fifth straight for the surging Vikes.
#Miguel Romeo# gave the Vikes the lead after scoring off a free kick in the 43rd minute. #James Rhodes# notched the Vikes' second in the 78th minute after connecting with a pass from captain #Sam Wingham#.
The Golden Bears responded with Kevin Perry and Milan Timotijevic each scoring in the final ten minutes of play, forcing the match into penalty kicks.
Canada West first team All-Star #Cole McFarlane# scored the first penalty for the Vikes with #Will Gye# following suit. Kilpatrick then made two key saves before #Wesley Barrett# scored the fourth and final penalty, capturing the Canada West title.
The Vikes entered this year's conference playoffs as the third seed after wrapping up the season with three shutout victories and posting an 8-5-1 record.
The Vikes will make their 11th CIS Championship appearance when they head to Langley next week to compete for their fifth national title and first since 2004.
