VANCOUVER – Vancouver Island native Elise Milosevich's goal in the sixth minute was all the UBC Thunderbirds needed to beat the UVic Vikes women's field hockey team 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The T-Birds completed the two-game sweep of the Vikes to remain undefeated at 4-0 during the 2009 campaign. The loss drops the defending champion Vikes record to 1-2-1.
After cruising to relatively easy wins in their first three games of the season, the 'Birds got all they could handle from the Vikes on Sunday. UBC held the balance of possession in the match, but the Vikes did manage to generate some offensive pressure.
Milosevich's goal came off a UBC penalty corner in the sixth minute, and the 'Birds had several chances to increase their lead throughout the contest, but a combination of solid goaltending from Victoria's #Kaitlyn Williams# and narrow misses from the UBC attackers limited the 'Birds to just one goal.
UBC rookie goalie Dina Bulfone picked up yet another clean sheet, as the T-Birds have yet to allow a goal against this year.
Next week will be the Vikes season home opener as they welcome the Calgary Dinos to UVic's Field Hockey pitch for a weekend doubleheader. Games will start, Saturday and Sunday at 11:00am.
