MSOC PREVIEW: Vikes vs. UBC/TWU

VICTORIA – Old rivalries will take centre stage at Centennial Stadium this weekend, when the UVic Vikes men's soccer team returns home to host the no. 5 UBC Thunderbirds and Trinity Western Spartans.

GAME INFORMATION
Sat. Oct. 23 vs. UBC Thunderbirds (Centennial Stadium) – 2:15pm
Sun. Oct. 24 vs. Trinity Western Spartans (Centennial Stadium) – 2:15pm

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
The Vikes have not beaten their mainland rivals UBC in the regular season since 2008. When the two sides squared off at Point Grey campus back on September 18th, the Vikes were dealt a 2-0 loss.

The Vikes fell 2-0 to Trinity Western back on September 17th with goals coming from Andre Cost and Garrett Peters.

SCOUTING THE VIKES

Sitting at 1-8-1, the Vikes secured their only points of the season at Centennial Stadium two weeks ago, defeating the Fraser Valley Cascades 3-2 and tying Saskatchewan 1-1. Wes Barrett currently leads the Vikes offensive output with two goals to his credit. Goalkeeping duties have been split between Elliot Mitrou and Michael Branion-Calles. Mitrou currently boasts the higher saves percentage with .750.

SCOUTING THE THUNDERBIRDS
The no. 5 Thunderbirds are sitting second in the Canada West standings with a 6-2-2 record, but will need a strong showing this weekend to stay in the hunt to host the conference championships. The T-Birds are seven points shy of table leaders Alberta with four games to play. Zach Kalthoff has been consistent in net allowing just five goals in his eight starts. Up front, Gagandeep Dosanih has led the T-Birds with four goals to his credit.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
Despite thumping Lethbridge 4-0 last weekend and sitting third in the conference standings, the Spartans were dropped out of the national rankings. Trinity Western has the conference's second-highest scorer Danfi Parker in their arsenal, who has already notched seven goals this season. Goalkeeper Andrew Fink has had another consistent campaign boasting a .853 saves percentage and conference-high five shutouts.
