VANCOUVER - The Canada West regular season came to a close on Sunday with the conference champion UBC T-Birds blanking the UVic Vikes women's field hockey team 2-0.
With UBC clinching the Canada West title on Saturday and the Vikes already assured of the second CIS tournament berth, Sunday's match meant nothing for the conference standings. But the two Canada West rival powerhouses still had plenty of pride to play for, as the season series was up for grabs, as well as momentum heading into nationals.
UBC scored twice in the final two minutes with Victoria Pearson clinching the league's scoring title with her eighth of the season in the 68th, followed by Natalie Sourisseau's empty net score in the 69th.
UBC's Bea Francisco recorded the clean sheet in net.
After the game the Canada West announced its major award winners and all-stars. Three Vikes were named to the conference team, including
Perri Espeseth,
Danielle Hennig and
Kyla Kirby.
The Canada West's major awards were split between UBC and Calgary. T-Birds' Sarah MacAulay won Player of the Year, Natalie Sourisseau won Rookie of the Year, and Bea Francisco won Goalkeeper of the Year. Dinos' Stephanie Petrowitsch won Outstanding Contributor, Jenn Swagar won Coach of the Year, and Wendy Stewart won Umpire of the Year.
