Fourth quarter slump dooms Vikes

ABBOTSFORD - In the lowest scoring game of the Canada West season to date, the UVic Vikes men's basketball team came out on the losing end of a 53-50 decision against the Fraser Valley Cascades.

BOXSCORE

Both teams struggled to shoot the ball, but the Vikes stumbled in the fourth quarter, scoring just five points, and saw a 17-point lead disappear.

Fraser Valley guard Zeon Gray broke a 50-50 deadlock in the final minutes, and later iced the win with a free-throw for his 11th point of the night. Sam Freeman posted the game's scoring high with 14 points, making three treys.

The Vikes led by 17 points early in the second half. UVic jumped out to the big lead after compiling half their offence output in the second quarter, scoring 28 points.

Zac Andrus held the UVic scoring high with 10 points, also making five assists. Jeff Spoor came off the bench to add eight points, and the Vikes shot just 29 percent from the floor.

The loss drops the Vikes to 3-4 in conference play, and will conclude the weekend set against Fraser Valley Saturday at 8 p.m.
