EDMONTON – A team high 16 point effort from Ryan MacKinnon wasn't enough as the UVic Vikes Men's basketball team fall 74-68 to the Alberta Golden Bears.
Both teams came out tentatively, with the Vikes finishing the first quarter with a slight 14-12 lead. UVic built up a 5 point lead early in the second, but Alberta kept chipping away, and entered the break up 33-31.
Alberta increased the lead slightly through the third quarter, but the Vikes fought back in the fourth. Seven straight points off two baskets from Mike Berg and a three by Ryan MacKinnon put the Vikes ahead by 3 with just over two minutes remaining in the game. A couple of costly fouls by UVic let Alberta right back into it, and the Vikes were unable to regain the lead.
UVic outrebounded the Bears 33-21 and limited them to only one offensive rebound the entire game. Three Vikes hit double-digits in scoring, with Mike Berg picking up 14 and Jeff Spoor adding 11 to go with MacKinnon's 16 points. Berg also led the team with 7 boards.
The loss drops the Vikes to 6-5 on the season, however, they remain in 5th place in the conference. UVic will conclude the weekend series against Alberta Saturday at 8pm.
