VICTORIA - The Manitoba Bisons upset the no. 10 UVic Vikes men's basketball team in an overtime shootout, prevailing 79-78 to even the weekend series at McKinnon Gym.
BOXSCORE
The Bisons knocked down 12 three-pointers, including five from Sean Maxwell to improve to 4-1 in league play. Maxwell, who finished with a game-high 19 points, hit two treys in the extra frame to deny the UVic comeback.
The Vikes trailed by 10 points, but mounted a furious comeback midway through the final quarter with a run of 12 unanswered points, capped by
Wendell Thomas' dunk.
Despite UVic taking the lead late, Manitoba forced the extra frame after a pair of treys by Eric Garcia. It was the 14th instance of the game being tied, and Garcia finished with 17 points.
In overtime,
Zac Andrus' potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out, but the senior still finished with a Vikes' high 16 points.
Marco Dolcetti and
Jeff Cullen also added 10 apiece. Cullen had to leave the game after sustaining a first half concussion, and the Vikes certainly missed the senior's leadership down the stretch.
The loss drops the Vikes to 3-3, and the team will now travel to Abbotsford for a two-game set with the Fraser Valley Cascades.
