Katie Bennett# and #
Danielle Hennig# scored to lead the UVic Vikes women's field hockey team to an opening weekend sweep over the Alberta Pandas, taking Sunday's finale 2-1.
Along with Saturday's 4-0 shutout victory, the Vikes finish the opening weekend of Canada West play at 2-0.
Bennett struck first, slipping the ball past Pandas goaltender Tory Spencer in the 33rd minute. Hennig potted the Vikes second score of the afternoon via a penalty corner in the 52nd minute.
With scoring opportunities at both ends of the field, the Pandas' Toni Almhjell was finally able to solve Vikes 'keeper #
Kaitlyn Williams# in the dying seconds of the game. The goal broke Williams' five-game shutout streak.
“It's a good feeling to have the two wins,” Vikes coach #
Lynne Beecroft# said after the game. “We may not have played as a whole today but, like I've told the girls [before], we can win ugly”.
The Vikes will look to build on this weekend's success when they host the UBC Thunderbirds for back-to-back games on September 25th and 26th with both starting at 11am. UBC went 2-0 in their opening weekend set against Calgary.
