Whitney Siegmann scored the equalizer for the UVic Vikes as they tied the reigning CIS champs UBC Thunderbirds 1-1 Saturday morning in Victoria.
Thunderbirds' forward Vickie Pearson opened the scoring in the 12th minute by burying the rebound off a penalty corner after steady UBC offensive pressure in the early minutes of the game.
The Vikes came out strong in the second half resulting in co-captain
Whitney Siegmann finding the ball in a scramble and slipping it past 'Birds goalkeeper Bea Francisco.
Vikes coach
Lynne Beecroft liked the way her girls played today. "I thought
Alexis Veljacic played very well, she's our right back and she made some really good tackles. UBC's got some really skilled players down their left side and I think she did a really good job clearing the ball out."
Beecroft also pointed out the versatility of Vikes midfielder/forward
Danielle Hennig, who found herself playing defence today. "We moved her back into a sweep position and she had great vision of the field. She played well."
"We need to start tomorrow the way we finished today. We're going to have more shots on net tomorrow," added Beecroft about tomorrow's rematch.
The Thunderbirds will face off against the Vikes in the second game of the weekend double header Sunday September 26 at 11am at the UVic turf field.
