Espeseth scores a pair, Vikes top T-Birds

VICTORIA – The UVic Vikes women's field hockey team remains the only undefeated team in the Canada West after toppling the defending champion UBC T-Birds 3-2.

Vikes' CIS All-Canadian, #Perri Espeseth# scored a pair of foals in the first half to hand UBC their first loss in 13 games, dating back to last season and including their CIS title run

“Perri stepped up and had two brilliant goals and I thought she also played well defensively,” Vikes coach #Lynne Beecroft# commented on her leading scorer.

Vikes third year, #Dani Hennig#, opened the second half by hammering in the 3rd goal of the game to give the home team a 3-0 lead.

The T-Birds finally managed to solve Vikes keeper #Kaitlyn Williams# in the 57th minute as Team Canada member Miranda Mann scored off a penalty corner. T-Birds striker Vickie Pearson also found the back of the net off a penalty corner in the 65th minute.

“We capitalized on our opportunities,” said Vikes Coach Beecroft following the victory. “We were happy to have beat UBC for the first time in years.”

Sunday's match-up was the first time UVic beat UBC dating back to November 2008.

The Vikes (3-0-1) who sit atop the Canada West standings travel to Calgary for next weekend's doubleheader against the Dinos. Calgary currently sits in 3rd spot with a 2-2 record. Both games, October 2nd and 3rd, will begin at 1pm.
