VANCOUVER - The UVic Vikes women's field hockey team extended their winning streak to two after they shocked the UBC Thunderbirds on their own soil. Goals from #
Emily Fisher#, #
Courtney Low# and #
Courtney Ellis# gave the Vikes a 3-0 win over the T-Birds.
UBC dominated the first half generating several chances but Vikes keeper #
Kaitlyn Williams# continued to stand on her head. She closed down a chance for UBC midfielder
Katie Jameson at the side of the net in the 14th minute, and soon after stoned reigning Canada West female athlete of the week
Robyn Pendleton. Pendleton stripped a Vikes defender and went in on goal alone, only to meet the stacked pads of a charging Williams.
The T-Birds continued to show the strength of their national team heavy squad but Williams stayed strong. In the other end, UBC goalkeeper
Bea Francisco had a mis-clear that led to Victoria's first goal. Midfielder Fisher was there to collect the loose ball at the top of the circle and fire it back through the crowd to give the Vikes a 1-0 lead.
Only seconds later, the Vikes caught UBC off-guard to go up 2-0. Forward #
Whitney Siegmann# made a long pass up the field that snuck through to Low, who was waiting at the top of the circle. Low one-timed the ball with confidence give the Vikes a 2-0 lead into the half.
Following the break, the Vikes rode their scoring momentum and began to take control of the game. In the 44th minute, centre midfielder Ellis, put in a rebound by the side of the net following a penalty corner.
Williams pursued to earn the shut out, her second in a row, and the Vikes are now lifted to a 2-3 conference record despite their 0-3 start to the season. Tomorrow, the Vikes will have their opportunity to tie up UBC in the Canada West standings. That game will be played at 1:00 p.m. at UBC's Wright Field in Vancouver, B.C.
